Section 2: Building a search strategy
Learning outcomes
Once you have formulated a searchable question you then need to build a search strategy. Section 2 identifies the steps necessary to build a search strategy and developing search terms. Search terms are developed using key words, truncation, and wildcards as well as the use of Boolean Operators. These concepts are explored using examples from practice. A PowerPoint presentation for understanding and applying Boolean Operators (mathematic logic) to combine search terms is provided.
By the end of this section you will be able to:
- Define terms related to building a search strategy
- Use Boolean Operators to make your search more specific
- Refine search terms using subject headings and keywords
- Set limits on your search results to increase their relevancy
